“Addressing the Syrian Refugee Crisis in Lebanon: WLCU GRC AUS & NZ Symposium Takes a Stand for Unity and Stability”
Exciting News! The World Lebanese Cultural Union (WLCU) Geographic Regional Council (GRC) Australia & New Zealand, led by Sheikh Jo Arida, took a groundbreaking step in outreach efforts. This past weekend, they organised a highly successful symposium at the Australian Catholic University in Sydney, focusing on the pressing Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon. This symposium tackled crucial aspects like the impact on the population, economy, and security.
Addressing the Syrian Refugee Crisis in Lebanon
The symposium witnessed a remarkable turnout of community, intellectual, social, spiritual, diplomatic, and temporal figures. Professor Nabil Chartouni, the global president of the WLCU, expressed unwavering support for Sheikh Jo Arida and all conference delegates in a heartfelt message. In-depth discussions were held, resulting in recommendations that were subsequently shared with the United Nations Security Council and the Higher Committee for the Displaced.
The symposium commenced with the stirring national anthems of Australia and Lebanon, followed by an introductory speech from Laudi Farah Ayoub, a board member of the WLCU body. Sheikh Arida then delivered a warm welcome address, emphasizing the symposium’s objective of raising global awareness and advocating for Lebanon’s interests and unity.
Esteemed speakers like Anwar Harb (AM), the editor-in-chief of “Annahar” newspaper, Mr. Joseph Alam (Community activist), Mrs. Jocelyne Charbel Badawi (WLCU GRC Media Officer), Mr. Toni Nissi (via video, President of the Committee of the UNSCR for Lebanon), and Pierre El Sokhn (WLCU GRC Treasurer & Diplomatic Affairs) contributed their insights on supporting the Lebanese Army and maintaining Lebanon’s neutrality. The Symposium concluded with Patrick Ayoub (WLCU GRC Member) reading the contents of the memorandum.
Throughout the symposium, participants engaged in thoughtful discussions on how to address the crisis, delving into its complexities while upholding human rights. They approached the matter from both a humanitarian and national perspective.
At the event’s conclusion, the WLCU GRC AUS & NZL made an impactful move by presenting a memorandum to the United Nations, urging a resolution to this urgent issue. While the crisis is undeniably humanitarian for the displaced individuals, it also poses a significant threat to Lebanon’s regions, communities, demographics, and overall stability due to the ongoing war in Syria since 2011.
Let’s stand together for a brighter future, united in our efforts to address the Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon. Join us in raising awareness and advocating for the stability and welfare of Lebanon and its people! #WLCU #LebanonStrong #SyrianRefugeeCrisis #GlobalUnit
